Professional Learning Opportunities

2026 Spring Regional

These sessions offer educators from across the state the chance to collaborate, apply Meaningful PE principles, and design assessments that support data-driven instructional decisions and measure student learning. Participants who meet all expectations will earn 6 SCDE Renewal Activity Hours and receive a certificate of completion.

Additionally, participants will receive a 30-minute presentation on South Carolina’s K-12 health education requirements.

This free, in-person professional learning opportunity will provide:

  • A brief overview of the meaningful PE principles – Fun, Challenge & Competition, Social Interaction, Motor Competence, Personally Connected Experiences, and Delight – and how these principles support the 2021 College- and Career-Ready Physical Education Standards and lesson planning within various instructional models.

Instructional models to be explored will include, but are not limited to:

  • Direct Instruction
  • Cooperative Learning
  • Sport Education
  • Peer Teaching

Meeting Dates & Locations

February 13 – T.L. Hanna High School – Anderson
February 17 – Horry County Schools Rivertown Complex – Conway
March 13 – SCDE Headquarters – West Columbia
March 16 – Sangaree Middle School – Ladson

Time

Check-in begins at 8:00 AM. Sessions start promptly at 8:30 AM and conclude at 3:30 PM. Each location will feature the same presentation.

Expectations and Registration Information

  • Expectations: Participants are expected to attend for the entire day.
  • Audience:
    • Physical Education District Leaders
    • Physical Education Teachers
      (Participants should plan to share learning and materials with their home district.)
  • Registration: Space is limited. Register online no later than 7 days prior to your selected session.

Student-focused PE and the Standards

Time: 3-hour session or full-day session
Description: Participants will be given an overview of several instructional frameworks and how to apply the standards.
Audience: Physical Education Teachers
Options:

  1. Half-day (3-hour) dive into the components of TARGET, Meaningful PE, and other similar frameworks. Examples of embedding an autonomy-supportive climate, social interaction, fun, challenge, motor competence, and personal connection into your instruction will be provided.
  2. Full-day session includes everything from option A, plus the opportunity for participants to create, reflect, and/or revise lessons with a student-focused lens.

Teaching Students with Disabilities in Elementary PE

Time: 3-hour session or full-day session
Description: Participants will be given an overview of Universal Design and adapted physical education in the elementary physical education classroom and how to embrace these principles to enhance the physical education experience for all students.
Audience: Elementary Physical Education Teachers
Options:

  1. Half-day (3-hour) dive into universal design and adapted physical education principles and examples of how to apply them in elementary physical education.
  2. Full-day session includes everything from option A, plus the opportunity for participants to explore and create activities that will apply their learning.

Teaching Students with Disabilities in Secondary PE

Time: 3-hour session or full-day session
Description: Participants will be given an overview of service delivery options for adapted physical education and how to provide standards aligned activities in each.
Audience: Elementary Physical Education Teachers
Options:

  1. Half-day (3-hour) dive into adapted physical education delivery options and examples of how to teach to the standards while adapting to each student’s unique needs.
  2. Full-day session includes everything from option A, plus the opportunity for participants to explore and create activities that will apply their learning.

Assessing Student Learning/Making Data-driven Decisions

Time: 3-hour session or full-day session
Description: Participants will explore formative and summative assessments and apply the 2021 College and Career Ready Standards for Physical Education to plan instruction.
Audience: Physical Education Teachers
Options:

  1. Half-day (3-hour) dive into physical education assessments for learning
  2. Full-day session includes everything from option A, plus the opportunity for participants to create assessments and plan for instruction using the Unit Resources for the 2021 College and Career Ready Standards for Physical Education.

Standards Aligned Fitness Games

Time: 3-hour session or full-day session
Description: Participants will explore ways to disguise fitness tasks and assessments into fun games.
Audience: Physical Education Teachers
Options:
  1. Half-day (3-hour) dive into fitness games.
  2. Full-day session includes everything from option A, plus the opportunity for participants to create new tasks using the standards and fitness concepts in a collaborative environment.
