Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST)

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching are the nation's highest honors for mathematics and science teachers. The program recognizes teachers for their contributions to instruction and learning, as well as their ability to help students make progress in mathematics and science. Awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award, teachers must:

  • Teach mathematics or science (including computer science) as part of their contracted teaching responsibilities at the grade level for the current award year in a public, private, or charter school
  • Hold at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • Be a full-time employee of the school or school district as determined by state and district policies, with responsibilities for teaching students no less than 50% of the school's allotted instructional time
  • Have at least five years of full-time employment as a K-12 teacher during which mathematics or science (including computer science) has been a part of the applicant's teaching duties prior to the current academic year
  • Teach in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Department of Defense Education Activity schools, or the U.S. territories as a group (American Samoa, Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and U.S. Virgin Islands)
  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Not have received the PAEMST award at the national level in any prior competition or category

Nomination and Application

Applications are open for the 2024 awards. If you know great math and science (including computer science) teachers, nominate them to join this prestigious network of professionals.

Once nominated, teachers are requested to complete and submit an application by February 6, 2024.

Recognition

Each awardee receives a certificate signed by the President of the United States and a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Awardees and their guests are honored during events that take place in Washington, DC. These events include an award ceremony, celebratory receptions, professional development programs, and discussions with policy-makers on how to improve mathematics and science (including computer science) education.

State finalists are also recognized by the South Carolina Department of Education and local professional organizations. These events include an awards ceremony, celebratory luncheon, framed certificates, and opportunities for professional growth experiences.
