The purpose of the Historical Thinking Skills Progressions and Geography Skills Progressions are to provide tools for teachers to make learning more transparent and to help find the right entry points for students in their progress towards mastering each thinking skill.
South Carolina educators created lessons inspired by the honorees in the annual African American History Calendar. These lessons may be adapted for students at any grade level, even in cases where grade levels are suggested.
The purpose of the African American History program, as referenced in legislation (S.C. Code Ann. § 59-29-55), is to ensure that the history of Africa and African Americans, their culture and experiences, is integrated into the existing K-12 social studies curriculum. The resources listed below will help educators infuse the African-American experience into all facets of the school curriculum.
Districts can use their discretion in the administration and grading of the assessment then report the results directly to the Education Oversight Committee (EOC) through the summer report card survey completed annually by school and district leaders. The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) does not administer, score or evaluate the assessment. Students who are currently in their freshman year of high school should complete the assessment in their Government course prior to graduation.
