Charter School Concerns, Guidance, and Resolution Resources

The South Carolina Department of Education supports transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement within the state's charter school sector. Stakeholders who have questions, concerns, or requests for assistance regarding charter schools, charter school governing boards, or charter school authorizers may use the information below to identify the appropriate point of contact and available resolution processes.

Whenever possible, concerns should first be addressed at the local level through the charter school, governing board, or authorizer. If additional assistance is needed, the Department may provide guidance regarding applicable laws, regulations, and available avenues for review.

What Happens After You Submit a Concern?

All submissions received by the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) are reviewed by Charter School Program staff. Upon review, SCDE will determine the appropriate next steps based on the information provided.

Depending on the nature of the concern, SCDE may:

  • Request additional information or supporting documentation.
  • Refer the matter to the charter school, governing board, or authorizer for review or resolution.
  • Review the concern as part of the Department's charter school oversight and accountability responsibilities.

Please note:

  • Submission of a concern does not guarantee a formal investigation, specific action, or a particular outcome.
  • Due to confidentiality requirements and the nature of certain matters, SCDE may not be able to provide detailed updates regarding the status or outcome of every submission.
  • All information submitted will be reviewed and considered in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and Department procedures.
