The Palmetto Civics Project is a resource-rich initiative designed to foster students’ understanding of and respect for the institutions that sustain our civic life. Our goal is simple but profound: every South Carolina graduate will leave school prepared to embrace the privileges and the responsibilities of American citizenship.
Most of these standards-aligned resources are free and available to every public, private, and home school in the state, equipping educators and parents with quality tools to bring our shared American story to life. Lessons illuminate our Founding principles of liberty, self-government, and the rule of law, connecting them to the duties of citizenship today.
With civic literacy declining nationwide this project boldly stands as South Carolina’s answer to decades of diminished emphasis on American history and Constitutional knowledge. Together, we are equipping the rising generation ready to engage in civic discourse, preserve freedom, and strengthen our republic.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. taught us that true strength and lasting change is found not in force, but in faith, conviction, courage, and compassion. Endorsed by Ambassador Andrew Young and authored by a professor at South Carolina’s own Anderson University, this lesson on “Hope,” drawn from Civil Rights: A Global Perspective, provides South Carolina public high school students a front row seat to history, grounded in Dr. King’s unifying message of civic progress through non-violence.
