The South Carolina State Board of Education recognizes the need to provide gifted education services to identified students in grades 1-12. Gifted and talented students are those who are identified in grades 1-12 as demonstrating high performance ability or potential in academic and/or artistic areas. These students require an educational program beyond that normally provided by the general school program in order to achieve their potential.
Regulation 43-220 requires "each teacher of a state-funded gifted and talented course or class shall have completed a gifted and talented endorsement program approved by the SCDE." The South Carolina Department of Education supports teachers in obtaining the endorsement through the Gifted and Talented (GT) Graduate Course Program Grant that is awarded to South Carolina institutions of higher education in order to provide teacher endorsement activities (graduate courses) for teachers assigned to teach gifted and talented students. Funding will be provided for tuition-free graduate courses for teachers who are pursuing either endorsement or certification in GT education. The GT grant-funded courses will be released as they become available.
The South Carolina Department of Education’s Gifted and Talented Best Practices Manual has been updated. Rather than being combined into a single manual, the new format includes the series of documents on best practices in gifted education listed below:
