African-American History Instructional Materials Grant 2018–19

Description

The SCDE will award grant funds to nonprofit organizations, school districts, or institutions of higher education for the development of new instructional materials in each of the following areas:

  • a multiple day experience for teachers in June 2019, emphasizing the African American Freedom Movement including but not limited to culture, prosperity, and prominent historic sites within South Carolina leading teachers to develop instructional plans for the SCDE website on African American Freedom Movement aligned to Standard 5-5, Standards 8-6 and 8-7, and United States History and the Constitution (USHC) -7 and -8 of the 2011 South Carolina Social Studies Academic Standards; or
  • an inquiry-based  instructional unit accompanied by an evidence set made of primary and secondary sources, aligned to the 2011 South Carolina Social Studies Academic Standards emphasizing African American history and the contributions of African Americans aligned to identified essential content.

Eligible Applicants

Eligible applicants are nonprofit organizations, school districts, or institutions of higher education that are capable of developing one of the following African American History instructional materials:

  • a multiple day experience for teachers in June 2019, emphasizing the African American Freedom Movement including but not limited to culture, prosperity, and prominent historic sites within South Carolina leading teachers to develop inquiry-based instructional plans aligned to Standard 5-5, Standards 8-6 and 8-7, or United States History and the Constitution (USHC) -7 and -8 of the 2011 South Carolina Social Studies Academic Standards; and/or
  • an inquiry-based instructional unit accompanied by an evidence set made of primary and secondary sources aligned to 2011 South Carolina Social Studies Academic Standards emphasizing African American history and the contributions of African Americans aligned to identified essential content.

Total Funding Available

Approximately $200,000

Funding Detail

The SCDE anticipates awarding one grant for the multiple day experience and several grants for the development of instructional units accompanied by an evidence set; however, only one grant will be awarded per/for each instructional unit aligned with essential content.
