The CPO’s main objectives include: 

• Work to preserve and protect individual and collective student data privacy while supporting its use to improve outcomes for all students, as well as internal agency PII risk management; 
• Provide program awareness, share information, and add value and build relationships at all levels of our organization as part of our larger data governance strategy; and
• Serve as external information resource to local school districts and offer best practices assistance with data incident management and compliance, where possible.

The SCDE uses a comprehensive approach to achieve the strategic objective of ensuring the appropriate use of personally identifiable information (PII) under the circumstances, in line with the Data Use and Governance Policy under S.C. Code of Laws Section 59-1-490, and the SCDE’s mission that all public education students graduate prepared for success.
